Models

What it takes:

Only that you’re ok with being seen nude. There is no need to have a ‘young’ body, nor that it be ‘busty’ or muscular. Bodies with ‘character’ or some unique quality are far more interesting to artists. You do not need to be a ‘professional’. Most figure drawing models are average people, simply working a job for a few extra bucks. Nothing more to it than that.

Photography is another media but there’s really little difference. Being nude and how you handle it is primary. Physical attributes come in second, or less.

Things to know.
Posing hints and ideas.  How to avoid discomfort.  What to bring with you. Preparation for a sesson.  Build a posing repertoire.

Do you want to be one?

Just *think* about it. Being ‘seen’ does not burn nor cause pain of any kind. Eyes traveling across the body do not leave scars. In fact *nothing* happens. So what is the problem? There’s really no reason not to do it. New models learn all this, usually within 30 seconds of dropping their robe that first time. They instantly rise above society’s implanted fears, gain financially, and help create art in the process. So if you have a bellybutton, you’re able to be a nude model.

But there is more. A reasonably nice personality, imagination, reliability, and simply an ablility to hold still  (or be spontaneous) with poses, are the things that will make you a better nude model. One who works.

You can post a photograph of yourself if you wish. See the guidelines for how to do that. Although accurate answers to the profile questions should give sufficient description for most nude work, those who hire do tend to want to see a photo.

The profile will also answer what kind of modeling you want to do. As well as what you do not want. Keep that  in mind.  Most ‘choice’ questions are there for the NO as well as the YES. They’re there to keep you from constantly being asked unwanted questions. So please fill them in.., for your own sake.

Newbies, take it slow.

Learn as you go. You may know people in the art community who can point you to paparticular people or places. But if not, starting with a college or art instittion is the way to go.

If you’re a newcomer and impatient to try it, and know that you can.., or to only do it once so you can say you’ve ‘been one’, drop us a note here.  We’ll find you a comfortable and easy going venue within a few days time. More than likely right here with us.

Pay varies according to venue. With figure drawing, you may work for a college that pays you. Or you may be at a campus or art institute where the students and artists themselves contribute towards an agreed upon amount. Art studios and individual artists also use nude models. In this area, figure drawing models can expect to earn in the $15 to $20 an hour range. Drawing sessions usually go for 2-1/2 or 3 hours, and you can expect to do 2 to 4 poses  within that time. Photographers usually pay more.., but the photo model must be ok with actual photographs and be ready for a much faster pace. Photographers look for a lot more energy and ‘input’ from their models.

Let us know of any difficulty you encounter using this site. Whether it be from an individual or something you come up against on your own. We should be able to clear it up for you very quickly. Without bringing you into the picture, if that’s a concern. On the flip side, please feel free to give kudo’s to the people and places you’ve enjoyed working for. Your can contact us privately by using the feedback page, or put them in your profile to be seen by all. It’s good to list the people and venues you’ve worked for. Or any additional details like availability, personal likes and dislikes, etc. Lastly.., please read the guidelines which we ask and expect everyone to live by.

Be cautious with email contacts received through WNYNM. Even though we verify email addresses and run other checks, be leary of those you do not know. Especially if they have just registered and are immediately attempting to contact models. We may not know them either. Registration dates are stated in their profiles. Check them. Study the entire profile. Look at the domain of the email address. It should be the college’s if they’re claiming to be one. If things don’t ‘seem‘ right, you can ask them outright, using anonymous email, or you can ask us what we know of them.

In addition, many people’s names and/or email addresses can be found if Googled. Any findings, or NO findings, will give you a better idea of the individual or venue in question. Models should NOT accept job offers from other ‘models’. You are not able to view another model’s profile. Be sure you are able to see the profile of the person offering you work. It will include their verified email address, their phone number, address, how long they’ve been here, etc.

If you call the phone numer provided.., be sure to use a pay phone or one that does not allow caller I.D. Calling the number will also verify it as good.., as long as the answering person knows it is listed on the WNYNM site.

A very good way to help other models, as well as to show your experience to the people looking to hire, is to list in your profile the places you’ve worked.  Another model being offered a job by someone they don’t know, but seeing them listed in your profile, will help them know others were ok with them. They might even email you for more details.  Help each other.

As for model safety in general, we can offer no better advice than what is presented for all models at www.modelsafety.co.uk.. Please read it thoroughly.
